A frozen AC unit is one of those things that looks strange and easy to ignore - until it isn't. Ice building up on your refrigerant lines is almost never the actual problem. It's a symptom. Something upstream caused it, and that's what we dig into.

The most common culprits are low refrigerant from a slow leak, restricted airflow, or a combination of both. When refrigerant levels drop, the pressure in the system drops with it. That causes the lines and coils to get abnormally cold, and moisture in the air freezes right onto them. The system keeps running, but it's not doing much cooling - and the longer it runs that way, the harder it works.

We use refrigerant leak detection to find exactly where the system is losing charge before we ever put refrigerant back in. There's no point in recharging a system that's just going to bleed it back out. Once we confirm the leak is addressed, we recharge the system to the correct pressure spec for that unit. No guessing, no shortcuts.

The good news is that catching this early makes a real difference. A frozen unit that gets ignored long enough can lead to a failed compressor, and that's a much more expensive conversation. Getting on top of it while it's still a refrigerant or airflow issue keeps repair costs reasonable and gets your home back to comfortable faster.
